Terminator 4 is not simply a sequel to the previous three Terminator films. Instead it serves to reset the series in the future, rather in the past/current times of the previous movies.

This isn’t to say that the previous movies are being ignored (as has been done with other franchise resets.) All of the events will take place after the events of the first three movies, and they will all be informed by the history presented in the past three films.

However, we’re also presented with a new history, one not foretold by Sarah Connor. Something in either the future or the past has changed, which is changing Terminator 4’s present. Have we lost you yet?
